about

In The Dusk Of Everything is a collection of songs that is intended to be experienced as a piece, from beginning to end. It's not really a concept record, but an aural film where each song is a vignette circling a theme and mood. I wanted to make a modern folk record, but I ended up with a folky mood record that owes as much to the American Folk Tradition and punk's honest, vulnerable balladry; as it does to the minimalism of Brian Eno and Arvo Part. It's the earthiest collection of songs and music that I've offered in quite some time.

The majority of this music was recorded directly to 2 inch tape via one performance in the time it took to sing and play. This album was made over months. I started writing it in the early winter of 2011 after moving to a cool little river town just outside of Pittsburgh, PA. I'd lived in my adopted home of Nashville, TN for years, but it was time for a change. It feels good to be back in the state where I was born. In The Dusk Of Everything was recorded and mixed between April and July of 2012. I made this record with the help of the great talents and production wisdom of David Ricketts, the producer of my first album, May Day. The words are warm and loud, and thanks to the mastering of the talented Hans Dekline, the album sonically has a quiet depth and cinema.

This album was financed entirely by money I earned via previous albums and creativity. I believe the risk I take to be creative with my life and my work is clearly my own. But it does make it all the more important that if you love it (and assuming then that it has value to you) that you buy it. I only offer you music that I absolutely believe in. And by purchasing it you contribute directly to my ability to make more music for you, us. And I appreciate that relationship more than you may know.

Track Name: And So It Goes
And So It Goes

i can't bear the thought of ever going back
my head was full of nails my heart was broke and black
i never understood that glimmering you chased
i found it useless so i turned and walked away

where were you when the sun went down
where were you when that sense of loss left town
i don't care if you're worried now
it's too late

the wind blew through the square last night like haunted souls
flags were snapping hard and rattling their poles
i drove down third street and it felt like i was gone
the ghosts of things we said were smoking on the lawn

where were you when the sun went down
where were you when all that hope left town
i don't care if you want me now
it's too late
it's too late

and so it goes
watch it go
watch it go
and you won't know
until you know

i hold no grudge no more though i did for a couple of years
the hate you harbor only welcomes what you fear
i wrote this song while the sun fell behind the hill
the stars look cold but there's a warm light on the sill

where were you when the sun went down
where were you when that sense of loss left town
i don't care if you want me now
it's too late
it's too late

Track Name: I Hate Everyone
I Hate Everyone

it's hard
to have half a mind
in a stupid world
can't we disappear
from here girl?

i hate everyone
i hate everyone
i hate everyone
but you

all their hearts are black
and full of useless stuff
they turn their backs
when things get tough

i hate everyone
i hate everyone
i hate everyone
but you

the great collapse
is coming soon
can't we just retire
to your room?

i hate everyone
i hate everyone
i hate everyone
but you

i hate everyone
i hate everyone
i hate everyone
but you

Track Name: And It's Such A Drag
And It's Such A Drag

who loves you
more than me?
and who gave you
all that he had?
all that he had
and who can make you laugh
and smile like that?
and who could break your heart
at the drop of a hat?
who paid the rent before you were famous?
who warned you that it steals?
now you talk about the past like it was just some waiting room
and you talk about me like i was just another one of your deals

and who wanted you
before all this?
and who held the girl
when no one gave a shit?
who can tell the truth now darlin'
and who can tell a lie?
who said they could never understand how people became monsters
and if that ever happened to you you'd rather lay down and die?
who loved you
more than me?
and who couldn't care less
now that i see
now that i see?

who can tell the truth now darlin'
and who can tell a lie?
who said they could never understand how people became monsters
and if that ever happened to you you'd rather lay down and die?
ah my valentine
you're poisoned now
seems the heart i knew
is gone, a plow
and you can walk away
like it's such a drag
that i should have something to say
after all that we knew and had
It don't even make you sad

Track Name: The Events At Dusk
The Events At Dusk

a high and lonesome sound
comes in to lay you down
you crawl below within
the pines are whispering
behold the wilderness
where men get lost and press
their luck in hopelessness
come on, get up get dressed

high atop some ferris wheel
sat to watch the autumn peel
yet again a gloaming sky
if there's shadow there is light
smokestacks along the coast
drop dark like frozen ropes
people got something in their throats
you don't say, you'll never know

blue silver is the sea
there is salt inside of me
i have felt the world begin
over and over again
over and over again

rubbed a dime with my thumb
pined and pried and wished you'd come
the dime slipped and then i lunged
thought to laugh but it wasn't fun
fell floating overground
swans dive through broken clouds
did the quiet get so loud?
i see you there, i see you now
put slow my hand in yours
thought quick, not anymore
nature always wins the war
now what are wars for?

blue silver is the sea
we alone made adam and eve
i have felt the world begin
over and over again
over and over again
over and over again
over and over again

Track Name: It Always Rains When You Miss Her
It Always Rains When You Miss Her

it always rains
when you miss her
and all you want
is to kiss her
like you did before you slid off the rails
it always goes like this it never fails

avenues
how they sparkled
when you knew
she was by your side
but the truth
isn't something you can shake kid
it's something that you did
that put a sorrow in her eyes

and what was soft
is now as sharp as nails
it always goes like this it never fails
she'll say your name again but it will never sound the same
some things we lose are lost but never go away
they never go away

she lit your smoke
smiled and said those things will kill ya
and when it started to snow
she pulled you to her room
and then you thought
come on now let's get married
well maybe it was crazy
but she felt the same as you

but what was soft
is now as sharp as nails
some storms are born within our own sails
she'll say your name again but it will never sound the same
some things we lose are lost but never go away
they never go away

Track Name: Amy, I'm Letting Go
Amy, I'm Letting Go

let's talk about it now
amy
you've always been hard to read
but your love saved me
where do you go
when the cold wind blows?
i told you a hundred times
it's no trouble i'll be fine
just don't make me read you're mind

there's freedom up ahead
but it's a hard curve
there's a reverb in our hearts
that speaks louder than our words
where do you go
when the cold wind blows?
i told you a hundred times
it's no trouble you'll be fine
just don't make me read your mind

real
love
is letting go
it's letting go
real
love
is letting go
it's letting go
i'm letting go
are you letting go?

Track Name: She's A Sparrow
She's A Sparrow

i'm leaving here
different then when i came
things can't be
what they were once they've changed

but lets go down to the mercy
lets play all the songs we loved
lets relive all that was beautiful
as if beauty was enough
i can still hear the laughter
over late nights in the flood
of a roar that broke a bright and brilliant heart
is it just too late or can't we even start.. again?

we settled down
time and disappointments took their toll
until we both stopped trying
and the summer turned to snow

now the sky is full of airplanes
no you can't make a wish
but you could throw your arms around me
like you did before all this
i'm sorry that i hurt you
i was lost and turning cruel
but i swear none of that darkness my love
was meant for you

she's a sparrow
and i'm a street
she's a sparrow
and i'm a street
she's a sparrow
and i'm a street
and i'll watch her float away
from me

Track Name: Stupid World
Stupid World

we wrote on the sidewalk
when no one was watching
this way to the ocean

and she took her clothes off
and waved at the traffic
but nobody noticed
it was a stupid world

ha da da da da da
ha da da da da da
ha da da da da da

our train leaves at midnight
there's light in the hallway
and bags on the curb now

where kids dress like soldiers
and bombs fill the windows
we'll marry in winter
in a stupid world

ha da da da da da
ha da da da da da
ha da da da da da

soon the trees will be green again
and the sun will be out
and the birds will return again
from the south

some suffer a blindness
of wild disappointment
despite good intentions

i showed her my scars then
she showed me her bruises
you're someone's salvation
in a stupid world

ha da da da da da
ha da da da da da
ha da da da da da

Track Name: Let's Wave Goodbye
Let's Wave Goodbye

let's wave goodbye
to who we were
we'll never be that again
let's wave goodbye
to who we were
we'll never be that again
and it's not without sadness
and it's not without tears
and it's not without thinking
about all the years
that we were that
but not anymore

let's wave goodbye
to who we were
and we'll never be again
No we'll never be again
We'll never be again

Track Name: *The Broken Side Of Time (Bonus Track / From the film Broken Side Of Time)
12 The Broken Side Of Time
(Bonus Track - From the film Broken Side Of Time)

i'm on the broken
side of time
15 years out of my skin
out of my mind
and there's no explaining
why i went where i've been
except that some of us are little more
than burnt fuel on the wind
my first kiss was stolen
my first love was drunk
i'm on my back on the ceiling
where the first pain was sunk
and when i say that
i don't mean that i was lifted or free
i was more like a dead dolphin at the bottom of the sea

i'm on the broken side of time
out of my skin, out of my mind
i sing hallelujah
from the darkest of rooms
until the cold light of nothing
shivers and blooms
now i don't long for forgiveness,
for you to even understand
in this there's no difference between a fist and a hand
it had nothing to do with you
and the truth is that it never did
i've been inches from the surface since i was kid
but i'm holding my breath
and i'm quiet and loud
been on the broken side of time afraid until now
afraid until now
