i can't bear the thought of ever going back
my head was full of nails my heart was broke and black
i never understood that glimmering you chased
i found it useless so i turned and walked away
where were you when the sun went down
where were you when that sense of loss left town
i don't care if you're worried now
it's too late
the wind blew through the square last night like haunted souls
flags were snapping hard and rattling their poles
i drove down third street and it felt like i was gone
the ghosts of things we said were smoking on the lawn
where were you when the sun went down
where were you when all that hope left town
i don't care if you want me now
it's too late
it's too late
and so it goes
watch it go
watch it go
and you won't know
until you know
i hold no grudge no more though i did for a couple of years
the hate you harbor only welcomes what you fear
i wrote this song while the sun fell behind the hill
the stars look cold but there's a warm light on the sill
where were you when the sun went down
where were you when that sense of loss left town
i don't care if you want me now
it's too late
it's too late

Matthew Ryan is brilliant. The fact that he is not better known is criminal. May Day is spectacular, so is East Autumn Grin and Regret Over The Wires. Boxers successfully captures the spirit and grit of those albums, which in my opinion, are his best. Please keep making these fabulous albums Mr.Ryan! Mark Dempster

Absolutely love this record. One of my favorite albums of this year-great songwriting, Matt Ryan has an awesome voice with plenty of "grit" and character, good guitar playing and an awesome bass tone. Love, love this Matthew White
